Hello, I am Emmanuelle Orr.

I am a French Printmaker and Artist based in London and Paris. My practice spans several techniques (screen printing, intaglio, risograph printing, cyanotypes)..

My work has been exhibited in the UK (London, Bath, Glastonbury, Doncaster) and internationally (Paris, Berlin). I have won the Art Hub studio prize at the Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair in 2022.

In recent screen printing projects, I have been exploring how printmaking forces images to disintegrate into light, colours and shapes, pulled apart and fragmented by the printing process itself. Halftones and gradients suggest dissolution and force the eye to constantly switch focus, looping between the narrative of the full image, and the patterns of colour within it. Overlaid or offset layers fool the mind into reading unity and harmony where there is only disorder and conflicting information.

Intaglio is a recent addition to my practice. My work in this technique has so far been focused on working with found materials  I accumulated through a literary research project, creating a space between 19th century London and our modern world. This project explores ideas of erasure and memory, what we share and what we hide, and texts and locations as markers of who we are.

Through the different mediums and different approaches, my practice sets out to find the spaces in-between, entering a liminal space between real and unreal, mundane and uncanny, past and present, figurative and abstraction.

My prints are based on my photographs and drawings, which I then work on digitally before printing them in London. I love the endless possibilities of printing, and its physicality - how different sources and techniques can be used to arrive at a design, and how the printing process itself can take the work in an unexpected direction.  The final piece is always something both unique and repeated, accidental and deliberate.

Je suis une artiste française vivant entre Londres et Paris.

Ma démarche cherche à représenter les “entre-deux”: Connexions passagères, performances solitaires, lieux abandonnés, vies nocturnes ou invisibles.. tous ces thèmes se retrouvent dans mon travail, qu’il se focalise sur des personnages ou des lieux. J’invite le spectateur à pénétrer ces espaces flous. J’aime les moments ou l’image glisse et disparait, à mi-chemin entre le réel et le rêve, le banal et l’accidentel, le figuratif et l’abstrait.

Les couleurs que j’utilise sont brillantes et saturées, accentuant certaines caractéristiques de mes images ou transformant la réalité en monde surnaturel. Les demi-teintes et dégradés suggèrent une dissolution et obligent l’oeil à passer de manière répétée du détail le plus coloré à l’image globale harmonieuse et lisible.

Je trouve l’inspiration dans tout ce que je vois, ce que je lis, dans la musique que j’écoute, les rencontres que je fais et les endroits que je découvre. Ma vie entre deux pays influence ma vision du monde et je navigue constamment entre deux univers, faits de références, souvenirs et même de langues différentes.

Mes “prints” sont tirés de mes photos ou de mes dessins, manipulés par ordinateur, et imprimés à Londres. Le procédé de sérigraphie est une technique très physique et qui présente des possibilités illimitées : l’image de départ peut être créée à partir de médias différents, combinant du dessin, de la photographie et de l’art numérique. Le procédé d’impression lui-même peut alors complètement transformer l’oeuvre, ouvrant des voies inattendues et permettant la création d’une image à la fois répétée et unique.
