Cosmic Dancer. Limited edition of 15 screenprints on paper.

2020

This print is the first I have done using a technique called Split Fount inking.

It started with an original charcoal sketch I did, a dancer whirling on tiptoes. I hadn’t used any drawings in my print for a while but the strength of the movement and the shading in this one convinced me to give it a go. After some digital experimentation I arrived at a design where the lines of the drawing emerge in a gradient against a strong black background.

I tried using colour separations to render the gradient, but it was losing its vibrance, so I decided to try it with this technique.

Split Fount inking means that instead of one colour, several are used on the screen at the same time. so that they merge and mix with each pull of the squeegee. They create beautiful gradients, and no two pulls are the same. It was fun to print this way, and in the end I have 15 prints which are all a little bit unique.
