Fast Cars. Limited edition of 18 screenprints on paper.

2021

Another print from the fairground series. I was never good at bumper cars as a kid- too scared to hurt other drivers or get hurt, I would end up trying to weave through the traffic and avoid getting hit a lot. From the sidelines though, they are a lot of fun to watch. The cars speeding and colliding, the drivers and passengers shrieking and laughing, the sparks where the cars connect with the ceiling, and of course the light shows around and above the track, hypnotic and mesmerising.

In this print I tried to convey the speed of the colliding cars, their shapes barely comprehensible as they spin in and out of focus and suddenly stop when they hit or get hit by another driver. Up close the image dissolve into a halftone abstraction but take a step back and watch the cars dance under the fluorescent lights.
