Midnight at the Light Fantastic. Limited edition of 20 screenprints on paper.
2020
This print started from a photo like the rest of the neon series, but here the neon doesn’t say anything, but instead points the way into a sex club. it makes me think of lights leading to the emergency exits on a plane (but there is no safety to be found at the end of this path), or it looks like the lights some dance floor (but no-one is dancing).
With this print I was trying to do justice to the luminous glow of the steps on the photo- luminosity is hard to render in print, and I didn’t want to use too much white to keep the vibrance of the colours, so I used several halftones (blues and pinks, and lights and darks) to give the impression of the shimmering lights.
The result is a mix of candy colours and deep darkness, which does justice to the naughty and nice atmosphere of the photo. It is called Midnight at the Light Fantastic, like a secret rendez-vous, a promise of an unforgettable night.
