Topographies. Cyanotype on paper.
Series of 7 editions of 3.
2021-2022
By their nature, cyanotypes evoke in my mind the idea of maps, plans or other technical drawings. I like the tension between their origins as a tool to catalogue, organise, document and their use as an art medium, transcending and transforming images, and imbuing everything with a supernatural, spectral aura.
This series of work plays on this duality, documenting places around me and transforming them from simple passageways or urban structures into entrances into extraordinary places, passers-by in some of the images reduced to nothing more than a barely seen ghostly vision.
I started with 6 images but always planned on adding to this series as I discover and capture new locations, these images providing a trace of my travels as well as building up a phantasmagorical world. So the series becomes two things at once: a memory of past journeys that is also a dream book of places that never fully were.
In 2022, a road trip provided the inspiration for the 7th print to join the series, a fresh look at a suspension bridge in London. More trips are planned for the year, hopefully providing more images to add to my mental map of the world.
